P.S. to last post: TV3's John Campbell apologizes in wake of media industry furor

All hell broke out in the New Zealand press immediately following John Campbell's interview of Ken Ring. The next evening  John Campbell made a full apology. Well done John.

Media veteran Dr Brian Edwards weighed in soon after the appearance to condemn Campbell's effort:

"John, your mindless, bullying, tirade against 'moon man' Ken Ring on tonight's Campbell Live was perhaps the worst piece of egotistical, self-important, out of control, closed-minded, biased, unprofessional non-interviewing I have seen in more than 40 years of New Zealand television."

 Cambell lets himself – and us – down

What the normally urbane, uber-empathetic Campbell may have revealed is that he really believes he is the correct arbiter of what we should think.  Campbell is one of our most accomplished, hard working and – for what it’s worth – genuinely good-hearted television journalists, which makes this lapse the more upsetting. And who knew there was a slavering Paul Henry in that gentle, be-suited body trying to get out.

John Campbell and the rules of advertising

Until two days ago, John Campbell was my favourite interviewer on television. I don't really want to get into an angry rant about everything Campbell did wrong in his interview on Monday with Ken Ring…

 … of course, that doesn't excuse Campbell's performance in the interview: instead of letting Ring explain his theory on predicting earthquakes, Campbell took the opportunity to yell at Ring about the validity of his claims while he tried to explain himself. Even if Campbell disagreed, surely the professional approach was to let Ring say his piece and then question him in a straightforward and polite manner. Preferably ending with a well-timed "maaahvellous", for old times' sake.
