What a turkey!.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;b&gt;Here is the link to the video of the full interview:&lt;/b&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;a href="http://www.3news.co.nz/Ken-Ring-I-predicted-the-Christchurch-quake/tabid/367/articleID/200226/Default.aspx"&gt;http://www.3news.co.nz/Ken-Ring-I-predicted-the-Christchurch-quake/tabid/367/articleID/200226/Default.aspx&lt;/a&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;b&gt;Below is my (first ever) complaint to the New Zealand Broadcasting Standards Authority:&lt;/b&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Reference "6d Broadcasters should respect the right of individuals to express their own opinions."&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;I watched John Campbell interview an invited guest Ken Ring on his opinions regarding the prediction of another larger earthquake to occur on the 20th March 2011 in Christchurch.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Now the very concept that somebody like Mr Ring could predict such an earthquake I find an anathema. So I was interested to hear his rationale.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Alas, John Campbell had other ideas. Certainly not to interview Mr Ring on the audience's behalf.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Rather Mr Campbell:&lt;br /&gt;- &amp;nbsp;Asked questions, but didn't give Mr Ring the opportunity to reply,&lt;br /&gt;- &amp;nbsp;Bullied and preached to Mr Ring,&lt;br /&gt;- &amp;nbsp;Talked over Mr Ring when he tried to respond.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;It was the worst case of journalism that I have ever seen. Certainly up there with Holmes' '&lt;a href="http://www.nzherald.co.nz/nz/news/article.cfm?c_id=1&amp;amp;objectid=3540638"&gt;Cheeky Darky&lt;/a&gt;' and that other plonker's '&lt;a href="http://www.shabooty.com/2010/10/14/dick-shit-new-zealand-tv-host-paul-henry-goofs-on-delhi-chief-minister-sheila-dikshits-name.php"&gt;Dick Shit&lt;/a&gt;' contributions.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Mr Campbell certainly owes Mr Ring and the NZ viewing public an apology.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;This &amp;nbsp;reporter deserves to be kicked in the bum now! The presentation was titled “Beyond the Farm and the Theme Park: transforming New Zealand's culture and economy.”&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;Dr Callaghan delivered fascinating insights into the economics of New Zealand’s future wealth creation possibilities and challenges. Of particular interest was his contention – that if New Zealand aspires to grow its way back to GDP per capita parity with Australia – it will not be through dairy or tourism. It would have to be through high revenue per employee “brain” (high tech) businesses. Below I attach some relevant quotes from a Herald article Dr Callaghan wrote back in February. This article, titled after his book &lt;a href="http://www.nzherald.co.nz/manufacturing/news/article.cfm?c_id=60&amp;amp;objectid=10559030"&gt;&lt;span class="Apple-style-span"  style="color:#3333FF;"&gt;“Wool to Weta”&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/a&gt; fully articulates the arguments from his keynote yesterday.&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt; &lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;i&gt;“New Zealand exports commodities, but the long-term trend for commodities - as graphed by The Economist - shows localised peaks when times are good, but the overall trend is relentlessly down.&lt;/i&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;i&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/i&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;i&gt;“To match Australia's per-capita prosperity, we would need to lift our GDP by US$30 billion a year. Where might we earn that money?&lt;/i&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;i&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/i&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;i&gt;“Adding US$30 billion per year would mean, on the face of it, multiplying our dairy exports by five, or our tourism by four. . And even if we could increase dairying or tourism, there are problems.&lt;/i&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;i&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/i&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;i&gt;“I doubt that it would be feasible to double Fonterra's production, let alone increase it by a factor of five, and I doubt whether we would want to quadruple the numbers of tourists visiting New Zealand each year, from 2.5 million to 10 million.&lt;/i&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;i&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/i&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;i&gt;“I want to suggest another model for New Zealand export business, and one that has few downsides. looking at largely brain-based business, it does seem, overall, that high-technology companies come out quite well. They consume little energy. They do not emit significant greenhouse gases or dump nitrates in our lakes. The Resource Management Act is no bother to them at all, and, as their products are valuable, they are perfectly happy with a high New Zealand dollar value. And these businesses reside in perfectly attractive buildings and surroundings. It is clear that the planet and its inhabitants are at the cusp of experiencing dramatic climate change, which has been caused by human activity over the last hundred years. &lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;Failure to act with a sense of urgency – at global, national, community and personal level – invites disaster. &lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;Looking back – it seems that 2006 was the year that individuals, consumers and citizens finally got it – that climate change is real and dangerous.  This was the year of Al Gore’s movie “&lt;i&gt;&lt;a href="http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0497116/"&gt;An Inconvenient Truth&lt;/a&gt;&lt;/i&gt;” and the release of the “&lt;i&gt;&lt;a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stern_report"&gt;The Stern Review on the Economics of Climate Change&lt;/a&gt;&lt;/i&gt;”...&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;...yet despite the growing consensus of concern and the experience of climate change symptoms - sea level rise, floods, droughts, floods, water scarcity, famine, disease, economic volatility…&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;…why do we as a species seemed unable to act? It’s as if we will really live out the &lt;i&gt;&lt;a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Boiling_frog"&gt;boiling frog fable&lt;/a&gt;&lt;/i&gt;. &lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;But wait – from an unexpected source - yet obvious in hindsight - has come a very powerful insight,  which offers the pathway to building effective global consensus and action…. Read on...&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;  &lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;b&gt;&lt;span class="Apple-style-span"  style="font-size:large;"&gt;Psychology is to blame for humans not acting on climate change&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/b&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;The American Psychological Association (APA) Task Force on the Interface  Between Psychology and Global Climate Change has just reported its findings.&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;The taskforce examined decades of psychological research and practice that have been specifically applied and tested in the arena of climate change. The task force's report offers a detailed look at the connection between psychology and global climate change and makes policy recommendations for psychological science.&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;"What is unique about current global climate change is the role of human behavior," said task force chair Janet Swim, PhD, of Pennsylvania State University. "We must look at the reasons people are not acting in order to understand how to get people to act."&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;The report cites a national Pew Research Center poll in which 75 percent to 80 percent of respondents said that climate change is an important issue. But respondents ranked it last in a list of 20 compelling issues, such as the economy or terrorism. Despite warnings from scientists and environmental experts that limiting the effects of climate change means humans need to make some severe changes now, people don't feel a sense of urgency. &lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;The task force said numerous psychological barriers are to blame, including:&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;ul&gt;&lt;li&gt;&lt;b&gt;Uncertainty&lt;/b&gt; – Research has shown that uncertainty over climate change reduces the frequency of "green" behavior.&lt;/li&gt;&lt;li&gt;&lt;b&gt;Mistrust&lt;/b&gt; – Evidence shows that most people don't believe the risk messages of scientists or government officials.&lt;/li&gt;&lt;li&gt;&lt;b&gt;Denial&lt;/b&gt; – A substantial minority of people believe climate change is not occurring or that human activity has little or nothing to do with it, according to various polls.&lt;/li&gt;&lt;li&gt;&lt;b&gt;Undervaluing Risks&lt;/b&gt; – A study of more than 3,000 people in 18 countries showed that many people believe environmental conditions will worsen in 25 years. While this may be true, this thinking could lead people to believe that changes can be made later.&lt;/li&gt;&lt;li&gt;&lt;b&gt;Lack of Control&lt;/b&gt; – People believe their actions would be too small to make a difference and choose to do nothing.&lt;/li&gt;&lt;li&gt;&lt;b&gt;Habit&lt;/b&gt; – Ingrained behaviors are extremely resistant to permanent change while others change slowly. &lt;span class="Apple-style-span"  style="color:#FF0000;"&gt;Habit is the most important obstacle to pro-environment behavior&lt;/span&gt;, according to the report.&lt;/li&gt;&lt;/ul&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;The &lt;i&gt;LA Times&lt;/i&gt; adds: The report also gets into useful specifics. It draws on past studies on people's behaviour in disaster situations. It examines what science knows about how you can get people to alter their behavior and what doesn't seem to work at all, no matter how fine and dandy an idea may sound. One example: People are more likely to use energy-efficient devices if they're given feedback, right then and there, about how much energy/money they're saving, rather than if they have to wait until they get their power bill.&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;b&gt;THOUGHTS:&lt;/b&gt; Thank you shrinks. Already he has said that the next generation of fighter planes -- the F-35 that took decades to develop at a cost of more than half-a-billion dollars each -- will be the last manned fighter aircraft.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The drones are dramatically tilting the war [in Afghanistan] in favour of the United States. Predators, for example, played a key role in killing al Qaeda in Iraq leader Abu Musab al Zarqawi in 2006. UAVs are credited with killing more than half al Qaeda's top 20 leaders.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Lt. Gen. David Deptula, USAF, explains that the next phase will enable a single drone to provide as many as 60 simultaneous live video feeds directly to combat troops. Some new drones will be as small as flies, others walk -- all appear destined to work with decreasing human input.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;“The future of how you use these un-manned systems or remotely piloted systems is really unlimited," says Deptula, based at the Pentagon and racing to keep pace with battlefield needs as well as Gates's demands. "We need to open our minds and think more about capability and impact we are going to achieve as opposed to how we've done business in the past.”&lt;div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Robotic warfare expert Peter Singer, who advised President Barack Obama's campaign team and has authored “Wired for War” says that remote warfare is changing mankind's monopoly on how conflict is fought for the first time in 5,000 years. All that limits its advance is its application, not the technology. "The barriers of war in our society are already lowering," he says. "This tech may allow them to lower to the ground. It is found in hundreds of household products, including plastic bottles and food containers. It is also present in the linings of canned goods such as soup, baby formula and canned fruits and vegetables. Over the past decade, a &lt;b&gt;growing body of scientific studies has linked the chemical to breast cancer, testicular cancer, diabetes, hyperactivity, obesity, low sperm count, miscarriage and other reproductive problems in laboratory animals&lt;/b&gt;. More recent studies using human data have linked BPA to heart disease and diabetes. And it has been found to interfere with the effects of chemotherapy in breast cancer patients.&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;Manufacturers of cans for beverages and foods and some of their biggest customers, including &lt;span class="Apple-style-span"  style="color:#FF0000;"&gt;Coca-Cola&lt;/span&gt;, are trying to devise a public relations and lobbying strategy to block government bans of a controversial chemical Bisphenol (BPA) used in the linings of metal cans and lids. According to internal notes of a private meeting, obtained by &lt;b&gt;The Washington Post&lt;/b&gt;, frustrated industry executives huddled for hours Thursday trying to figure out how to tamp down public concerns over the chemical bisphenol A, or BPA. &lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;The notes said the executives are particularly concerned about the views of young mothers, who often make purchasing decisions for households and who are most likely to be focused on health concerns. Soda companies are weighing the impact of the bill, which they say also puts severe restrictions on advertising and packaging. Former FDA Commissioner David Kessler, who spearheaded the original effort to treat the caffeine in soft drinks as a drug, hailed the Senate vote of 79-17. “It's as strong a bill as we could have ever imagined,” he said. More than 350,000 people die every year from soft-drink-related diseases, according to government figures. About 45 million U.S. adults are regular soda-pop drinkers, though the prevalence has fallen since the U.S. surgeon general's warning 45 years ago that soda drinking causes obesity.&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt; The FDA has announced new regulations, slated to take effect July 1, which will tighten governmental controls over the soda industry. All pop cans will be required to carry a warning of the myriad ill effects which are connected with regular soda-drinking. Singer, a senior fellow at the Brookings Institution think tank and the author of &lt;span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-style: italic;"&gt;Wired for War: The Robotics Revolution and Conflict in the 21st Century&lt;/span&gt;.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;“Forty-three other countries besides the U.S. build military robots,” he says.  “So you have this just huge... immense growth. The best way to imagine where we're going is to look at what Bill Gates says about robotics" He says, "Robotics are about where computers were in 1980.” &lt;/div&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;Warfare goes open source: Just like software, warfare is going open source. That is, we're starting to use more and more systems that are commercial, off-the-shelf -- some of it is even DIY. You can build your own version of the Raven drone, which is a widely used military drone, for about $1,000 dollars. So we have a flattening of the landscape of war and technology that is just like what happened in software. A wide variety of actors can utilize these systems. &lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;The non-state actors range from Hezbollah to this militia group in Arizona to a bunch of college kids at Swarthmore. We already do this for water and sewage. Professor R. Malcolm Brown Jr. and Dr. David Nobles Jr. have created a microbe that produces cellulose that can be turned into ethanol and other biofuels. Nobles says that the microbe could provide a significant portion of the nation's transportation fuel if production can be scaled up.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;“The cyanobacterium is potentially a very inexpensive source for sugars to use for ethanol and designer fuels,” says Nobles, a research associate in the Section of Microbiology and Molecular Genetics. Since then silence:&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The U.S. Air Force's Unmanned Aerial Vehicle Battlelab (UAVB) has tested software that can pick desired features out of UAV video long before they become visible to the naked eye, according to Lt. Col. Timothy Cook, chief of the UAVB's Combat Applications Division. Based at Eglin Air Force Base, Fla., the UAVB's mandate is to take existing hardware and weapons and integrate them with UAVs. The recognition software originally was developed for the Nevada gaming industry, to automatically spot problem gamblers when they enter casinos, Cook said. "It's based on the dimensions of your face," he said. "If I trained the camera on your face, it would plot the distance between the pupils of your eyes ... the length of your nose, the width of your mouth."&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Intrigued by the possible applications to UAV surveillance video, the UAVB conducted a test last year at Eglin using streaming video from a Pointer UAV. A captain's face was entered into the computer as a search item, and the UAV was launched. "It starts beeping on this clump of trees," Cook said. "And they had to drive the UAV about another two miles before they could get close enough [to see] there was a vehicle underneath the trees." The captain whose face had been loaded into the computer was sitting in his truck eating lunch. "It found his face through the trees, through the windscreen, in the shadows of the trees, and we went, 'Wow, we need to explore this,'" Cook said. While the UAV Battlelab continues to pursue the Digital Imagery and Video Object Tracking software's application to operations, the technology also has found its way into the classified world, Cook said&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;strong&gt;THOUGHTS:&lt;/strong&gt; Can you imagine how much more sophisticated the application is now after 3 years. It reports that:&lt;br /&gt;&lt;ul&gt;&lt;li&gt;While 82% of the respondents closely monitor the issue of global warming, 65% said that they don’t yet have a defined energy strategy to deal with it.&lt;/li&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;li&gt;65% said that no one within their organizations is tasked with defining the company’s energy strategy.&lt;/li&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;li&gt;52% identified improved corporate reputation as the most important return on investment for environmental programs.&lt;/li&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;li&gt;38% rated actual carbon emission reduction as the most important metric for return on investment for environmental programs.&lt;/li&gt;&lt;/ul&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Further to the above, I also ran across the &lt;a href="http://climateexchangeplc.com/downloads/Preliminary_announcement_Final.doc"&gt;“Preliminary results for the year ending 31st December 2006”&lt;/a&gt; of the &lt;a href="http://climateexchangeplc.com/"&gt;Climate Exchange Plc&lt;/a&gt;. The Climate Exchange plc operates the world’s largest markets for trading carbon credits; the European Climate Exchange and the Chicago Climate Exchange. The report details a dramatic growth (be it from a low base) in global the carbon trading market…for example CLE chairman Richard Sandor reports:&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;em&gt;"The Chicago Climate Exchange (CCX) saw its average daily volume increase by 610% over 2005. Total volume in the Carbon Financial Instrument (CFI) for 2005 was l.4 million tonnes, which grew to 10.3 million tonnes in 2006. For the first quarter 2007, average daily volume increased by 167% over the figure for the full year 2006. Our list of members also grew dramatically. We closed 2005 with 131 members which increased to 238 in 2006."&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/em&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;strong&gt;THOUGHTS: &lt;/strong&gt;Both these reports signal that despite a sea change jump in global corporate interest in climate change, most businesses have yet to develop coherent strategies to engage the challenge. Those businesses that are acting have focused their reduction strategies around carbon emissions trading (&lt;a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Emissions_trading#Cap_.26_Trade_vs._Baseline_.26_Credit"&gt;Cap &amp; Trade&lt;/a&gt;).&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;And that the growth in carbon credit trading in the US and Europe is explosive. And clearly the stock markets get it too. Mountain View, California based company &lt;a href="http://www.accelovation.com"&gt;Accelovation&lt;/a&gt; has just launched their market-discovery software which crawls the Internet to identify emerging market needs/trends, and potential solutions to meet those needs. In a recent PC World article Jens Tellefsen, vice president of Accelovation products described the service “We will identify any statement that talks about a need for something, or a claim or solution for something. That can be an individual talking about how annoying it is to cook, or to use a particular product, to people that are dying or suffering from some disease . . . to companies that are looking for new ways to do something.”&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;The initial Accelovation service offering available is not cheap. Customers currently pay between US$50,000 for a few sets of searches to over US$100,000 for annual subscriptions. Accelovation say they already have two dozen customers in the Fortune 500, including 3M, Procter &amp;amp; Gamble, General Mills and Clorox. Speaking of future plans Tellefsen said “We're rapidly moving forward with new offerings that will be more suited to small- and medium-sized companies, and be more automated and packaged in a way that makes sense to them.” &lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;strong&gt;THOUGHTS:&lt;/strong&gt; An automated needs and solutions search and matching software agent sounds compelling. There could also be an explosive demand for additional matching applications if only Accelovation could make them affordable, to not just SMEs, but individuals. Imagine the convenience and value proposition for consumers of an Accelovation dating or travel planning engine. A sort of yellow pages on steroids? The ads challenge the validity of current climate change science. The Competitive Enterprise Institute (CEI), a nonprofit conservative business friendly think tank, have timed the ad campaign to coincide with the release of a documentary called “"&lt;a href="http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/thr/reviews/review_display.jsp?vnu_content_id=1001918442"&gt;An Inconvenient Truth&lt;/a&gt;," which is about the threat of climate change that features former Vice President Al Gore. Check out the ads &lt;a href="http://streams.cei.org"&gt;here&lt;/a&gt;. The CEI ads defend carbon dioxide as a beneficial natural resource rather than a dangerous pollutant. Each 60-second ad ends with the line, "&lt;a href="http://streams.cei.org/"&gt;They call it pollution; we call it life&lt;/a&gt;."&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;It’s hard not to see this CEI action as a cynical continuation of the American Petroleum Institute’s (API) propaganda strategy, which was first exposed by the New York Times in 1998. The New York Times published an API memo outlining a strategy to invest millions to “maximize the impact of scientific views consistent with ours, with Congress, the media and other key a&lt;a href="http://streams.cei.org/"&gt;&lt;img style="FLOAT: right; MARGIN: 0px 0px 10px 10px; CURSOR: hand" alt="" src="http://photos1.blogger.com/blogger/881/177/320/CEI04.jpg" border="0" /&gt;&lt;/a&gt;udiences.” The document stated: “Victory will be achieved when…recognition of uncertainty becomes part of the ‘conventional wisdom.’”&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;strong&gt;Thoughts:&lt;/strong&gt; My tracking of global warming and climate change science research over the last 2 years signals that humanity’s use of fossil fuels is having a dire and dramatic impact on Earth. When oil industry funded ‘research’ comes up with the exact opposite finding, and seeks to manipulate public opinion, you have to laugh at the absurdity. And cry, because of the power such big oil interests can bring to morph the truth into such self-serving, and environmentally dangerous spin. The content of the calls has not been recorded. Rather the NSA has been collecting and using call data to “analyze calling patterns in an effort to detect terrorist activity.” The tracking began shortly after ‘9/11’ when three major telcos – AT&amp;T, Verizon Communications Inc. and BellSouth Corp. starting handling over customers' phone calls records to the NSA. Apparently one big telecommunications company, Qwest Communications International Inc., has consistently refused to turn over records to the NSA, citing privacy and legal concerns. Washington is going ballistic. Senior Democrats and Republicans are screaming blue murder.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;strong&gt;Thoughts:&lt;/strong&gt; Shades of Watergate and impeachment in the air. In peacetime this phone tracking of millions of citizens would be outrageous. But at a time of this ‘War on Terror’ where should you draw the line, when you are trying to protect your own citizens? When combined with recent exposures of secret CIA prisons and abuses in Iraq, the unfolding picture is one of a completely unfettered security apparatus. And you have to assume that the press is only seeing a fraction of the secret picture. So the question is – when does Bush push America across the spectrum line of defending the principles of democracy to becoming itself a totalitarian state? "The Australian Bureau of Statistics reports the average selling price of Aust&lt;a href="http://photos1.blogger.com/blogger/881/177/1600/Bacchus3.jpg"&gt;&lt;img style="FLOAT: right; MARGIN: 0px 0px 10px 10px; CURSOR: hand" alt="" src="http://photos1.blogger.com/blogger/881/177/320/Bacchus3.jpg" border="0" /&gt;&lt;/a&gt;ralian wine exported in January 2006 was just $3.78 per litre. The Australian Business Weekly (subscription required) summarises the problems in their May 4th article “Wine: The grape squeeze”:&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;ul&gt;&lt;li&gt;Production of wine exceeding demand. &lt;/li&gt;&lt;li&gt;Panic selling by inexperienced growers. &lt;/li&gt;&lt;li&gt;Strong $AUD making exports less competitive. &lt;/li&gt;&lt;li&gt;Retail consolidation hurting boutique wineries. &lt;/li&gt;&lt;li&gt;Slow growth of 2-3% a year in domestic demand due to high tax on alcohol. &lt;/li&gt;&lt;li&gt;Poor understanding of demand trends. &lt;/li&gt;&lt;li&gt;The number of wine companies growing from 892 to 2000 in the past decade.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/li&gt;&lt;/ul&gt;But wait…it’s not all gloom and doom. Union Tribune Staff Writer Frank Green reports that in a recent Gallup Poll, “39 percent of Americans said they drink wine more often than any other alcoholic beverage – the first time wine has outpaced beer, at 36 percent, in consumer preference”. U.S. wine sales have boomed in the past 10 years, and they rose 8.3 percent last year to an estimated $26 billion. Part of the continued growth, and sales spikes in the US market is attributed to “increased quality of imports from Chile, New Zealand and other countries.”  &lt;div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;strong&gt;Thoughts: &lt;/strong&gt;This boom and bust is very tough on the rapidly growing number of small wineries which lack cost scale, and very challenging for the volume producers of average wine. The strength and growth of the US market will eventually pull the Australasian industry out of trouble…there will be a whole lot less boutique players in the game by then. For consumers operating on the ‘24 hour cellar’ this wine bust will be great news for the next few years. Ethan Gilsdorf reports that just one shady tree can save a homeowner US$80 a year in energy costs. “Yes, humble street trees cool the air, reduce pollution, and absorb storm-water runoff. But the benefits aren't only ecological” says Gilsdorf. “Property values are 7 percent to 25 percent higher for houses surrounded by trees. Consumers spend up to 13 percent more at shops near green landscapes. One study even suggests patients who can see trees out their windows are hospitalized, on average, 8 percent fewer days.”&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;I checked a little further and found several other web articles leading up to the National Arbor Day in America on 28th February 2006. It's all about Nucor the American steelmaker. Nucor's 387% return to shareholders over the past five years tops the performance of almost every other company in the Standard &amp; Poor's 500-stock index.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Businessweek reports that what makes this rust belt industry player a star, is that it “treats its workers like owners”. A key driver of worker buy-in to the com (pany and ongoing innovation is Nucor’s pay system. Almost every worker is paid relative to their performance or value contribution. Specifically a steelworker at a different mill company can clock up $16 to $21 an hour. The base rate for a Nucor worker is nearer to $10 and hour, but a production bonus for defect-free steel by a worker’s whole shift can deliver three times the average steel w&lt;a href="http://www.nucor.com/"&gt;&lt;img style="FLOAT: right; MARGIN: 0px 0px 10px 10px; CURSOR: hand" alt="" src="http://photos1.blogger.com/blogger/881/177/320/Nucor.jpg" border="0" /&gt;&lt;/a&gt;orkers disposable income to the Nucor employee. The late &lt;a href="www.anderson.ucla.edu/faculty/"&gt;F. Kenneth Iverson&lt;/a&gt;, founder of Nucor, summed up his then radical business approach “Employees, even hourly clock-punchers, will make an extraordinary effort if you reward them richly, treat them with respect, and give them real power.”&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;I found a fascinating case study published by Dartmouth College in 2000 which describes Iverson's employee relations principles which underpin Nucor's success. Google ads? Word of mouth ceding? Sponsored podcasts or games? Mobile minute incentives? Picking or creating the winning channels in this new electronic tribal world is a significant opportunity.
